New Season 2018 and AGM

23rd August 2018

Thanks to my rather late organisation of the AGM in recent years, it was decided at the last one to specify this year’s date, so the AGM will be at the Albion on Monday 3rd September at 8.30 pm.

Full agenda to follow, but as ever if you have any issues to raise please let me know. As usual I would appreciate it if teams could confirm that they will be playing again this year ASAP.

As always, anyone can attend the meeting. New teams or players are always welcome.

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the 3rd.

FIQL News

AGM

5th September 2018

Following the AGM on Monday, the important bits are:

Match dates: 22/10/18 - 03/12/18 and 07/01/19 - 18/02/19
Cost: £70.00 per team all in.

Full minutes are here.

Looks like we will be down to 7 teams this year.

Beer Round Tankard

10th September 2018

As last year’s tankard had not been engraved at the time of the presentation - and this being only the second one awarded - here’s a picture of what it looks like in case you haven’t seen one yet.

Delay to Season Start

10th October 2018

Many apologies but I am going to have to delay the start of the season.

My Mum, whom most of you will know from her time playing in this league, has very recently - I’m talking the last 3 weeks, no more - gone from being merely slow and steady on her feet to, at times, virtually immobile. This huge and sudden change has been hard to adjust to, particularly for my 85 year old father; while we are just about coping, he is finding things very difficult and exhausting.

On top of this there has now been a family bereavement. I had until today hoped I could just about get things underway by the original date, but now that I have to make plans to get Mum to the funeral in Manchester next week it seems unrealistic and is probably best I delay.

I will fix a new start date as soon as I can.

Again, my apologies, especially to those who had wanted an earlier start this year.

Season Start (if it’s not too late…)

20th November 2018

Sorry to have left you all in the dark these last few weeks. Besides the website update problem (a silly mistake by me, the sort of thing you only do when you’re stressed out) I’ve been having more trouble with Mum.

She suffered a fall on the morning we were due to leave for Manchester and missed the funeral of her last remaining sister. This seemed to have a bad effect on her and things got much worse.

I’ll hold my hands up, by this point I was getting pretty despondent about it all and had lost interest in outside matters, quiz included. Just a week ago I was on the brink of throwing in the towel for this year, but Mum has perked up a bit and hopefully I can salvage the season.

Assuming everyone still wants to carry on, first match would be 26th November. The randomly-selected first round (home team first) is:

Bat & Ball vs Jolly Farmer
Cricketer’s vs Frensham RBL
Hale Nomads vs Hare & Hounds
Rest week: Albion

Given the late start I suggest we consider playing until the 10th December if that suits the pubs. I can work around a couple of venues not wanting to host on that day if they let me know ASAP.

Similarly for after Christmas, I know there were some who wanted to avoid certain dates if possible - if you let me know I can try and accommodate. Otherwise - assuming we play the 10th - that takes us up to 18th March (which is actually St. Patrick’s day in case anywhere is celebrating on the Monday itself).

Given all that I’ll not generate the full fixtures until I hear what dates people want to play.

I would ask all teams to confirm, as soon as possible, whether they still wish to play and their thoughts on the 10th December and any other dates next year.

Again, apologies for the messing around.

Season underway at last (phew!)

28th November 2018

Well at least everyone is still in!

However, due to an unfortunate combination of commitments we cannot play on the 10th December, so round 3 will be on the 7th January and the season will go on until the 25th March. If there are any problem dates for anyone please let me know ASAP and I’ll try to work round them.

Otherwise, fixtures should be sorted out by tomorrow.

Fixtures

30th November 2018

Well it’s taking me a little longer than expected to format up all the fixtures (new version of Word, can’t get my head round it!) so here are the ones for Week 2, Monday 3rd to be going on with:

Frensham RBL v Albion
Hare & Hounds v Cricketers BL
Jolly Farmer v Hale Nomads
Rest Week: Bat & Ball

Full fixtures will be here ASAP!

Fixtures

3rd January 2019

Happy New Year all, hope you had a good festive season.

I’m afraid I only posted the round 3 fixtures on the results page and forgot to put up the full list. I think most people spotted that but you can now get the full list here.

Beer Round

5th February 2019

As it’s the half way point I thought we’d better have a little update on the Beer Round Challenge:

Albion

5

Bat & Ball

4 (+ 1 draw)

Hale Nomads

4 (+ 1)

Frensham RBL

2 (+ 2)

Jolly Farmer

2 (+ 1)

Hare & Hounds

0 (+ 2)

Cricketers BL

0 (+ 1)

Subs Please!

4th  March 2019

As we are nearing the end of season soon, could I please ask those teams which have not yet paid up to look into the matter as soon as possible. Thanks.

Albion are the new Champions

12th March 2019

Last night’s results mean The Albion are uncatchable, with a five point lead and only two rounds to go. Second place is going to be between the Bat & Ball and Frensham RBL, as the Jolly Farmer have a rest week coming up.

The Beer Round Challenge looks like this at present. As division winners are ineligible, the trophy will go to the second-placed team should the Albion also top this list:

Albion

9

Bat & Ball

7 (+ 1 draw)

Hale Nomads

6 (+ 1)

Frensham RBL

4 (+ 2)

Hare & Hounds

3 (+ 2)

Jolly Farmer

3 (+ 1)

Cricketers BL

0 (+ 1)

Beware - two sets of questions sent this week

28th February 2019

As sometimes happens, our question setter will be away for a week and has sent out two weeks worth of questions this time. They are marked appropriately and, as it happens, no-one has home games both rounds but please don’t be alarmed if you weren’t expecting a set this week.

Obviously the set for the 11th will not have results in them.

Runners-up Race Still On

19th March 2019

Last night’s results still leave the Bat & Ball and Frensham RBL tied on 15 points, so all to play for next week.

Also, the Bat & Ball win the Beer Round Challenge. Well done!

Finally, the Presentation and BFQ has been provisionally set for 8th April at The Albion. I will confirm later this week. If that date is a problem for anyone please let me know ASAP and we might be able to rearrange it.

Final Results

26th March 2019

2018-19 Champions are The Albion, with the Bat & Ball runners-up by virtue of a superior average score.

Beer Round Champions are also Bat & Ball, since division winners The Albion cannot win both.

Albion

10 (+ 1 draw)

Bat & Ball

8 (+ 2)

Hale Nomads

6 (+ 2)

Frensham RBL

4 (+ 3)

Hare & Hounds

4 (+ 2)

Jolly Farmer

4 (+ 1)

Cricketers BL

0 (+ 1)

Trophy Presentation and BFQ

29th March 2019

The Trophy Presentation and BFQ are confirmed for the 8th April at The Albion. As always proceedings start at 8.30 but please try and get along in good time to get a drink & find a seat.

As ever the BFQ is open to anyone concerned with the quiz - substitutes, question masters, landlords - all are welcome. This year, following the decision at the last AGM, we shall be awarding a small trophy for the winners.

And as always I would ask teams to let me know how many people are likely to be attending, even if you are not coming, so that we have some idea of how many to cater for. Thanks.

I look forward to seeing all of you on the 8th.

Derek Sargeant

17th June 2019

Very sad to learn of the sudden passing of Derek Sargeant, long-time member of the team playing recently as the Hare & Hounds but better known for their many years as Bat & Ball B. Deepest sympathies go out to his family.

The funeral will be held at Aldershot Crematorium on Tuesday 18th June at 3.45p.m. I hope to attend on behalf of the League.
