Apologies
for the long wait for any news but after a lot of messing around the Fox Inn
has finally declined to host the end of season presentation and Big Friendly Quiz.
Unfortunately both the Easter and May Bank Holiday weekends have got in the way
too and delayed things much more than I would have liked, but I finally have a
date. In the absence of any rules or precedent for this (I wasn’t even involved
when the Crown declined in 1995 so I don’t know what happened then) I tossed up
between Div 1 winners and Div 2 runners-up and as such offered the gig to The
Albion, who accepted, hence:
Trophy Presentation and BFQ this year will be at the Albion
on the 18th May.
I know it’s
not a great deal of notice but I didn’t want to delay any more or we’d be
combining it with the AGM.
Proceedings
start at 8.30 as usual - please try and get along in good time to get a drink
& find a seat!
As always the BFQ is open to anyone concerned with the quiz - substitutes, questionmasters, landlords - all are welcome.
Also as usual I would ask everyone to let me know how many people are likely to be attending from each team, even if you are not coming. This is very important as Mick will be offering food as usual and will need some idea how many to cater for. Thanks.
Hope to see all of you on the 18th.

BFQ and presentation is Div 2’s turn and so is
presumably going to be at The Fox again, but with Easter in the way I’ll
have to check with Sam to confirm.
Watch this space!
Or Facebook, which is good too!
Apologies to those wondering what happened
Monday - I forgot to publish the website after I updated it!
Doesn’t seem right with the last week of the
season approaching!
Everything close at the tops of the two
divisions, going to be a nail-biter next week.
Good luck everyone!
As I had only had I few cheques in I didn’t post them before
Christmas, and I’ve left it until after the month end this time to try and
avoid any unwelcome surprises, but I’m going to bank the subs I have had so far
in the next day or two. Let me know ASAP if that’s a problem for anyone.
And for anyone who hasn’t paid yet, a gentle
reminder…
Sorry, completely forgot to post the results
yesterday!
There is also a new revision of the fixture list as I was asked to accommodate a pub home requirement after the previous lot had been distributed, but this affects only the two Cherry Tree and Jolly Farmer ties. All published fixtures for all other teams are still valid. New fixtures here.
Hooray! We now have a rescheduled second part of the season with no more rest weeks. New fixtures here.
This coming Monday (19th) looks like this:
Div 1:
Albion B v Jolly Farmer
Bat & Ball A v Bat & Ball B
Cherry Tree v Albion A
Div 2:
Fox Inn v H&H Hounds
Frensham RBL B v Cricketers BL
H&H Hares v Hale Nomads (RBL)
Thanks for your patience!
Looks promising for the rescheduling for a full
fixture list! Just waiting on one confirmation. Updated schedules will be
available ASAP - will e-mail / txt captains when ready.
OK folks, slight problem in Div 2:
The Frensham RBL A team have withdrawn. All matches they have
played or were scheduled to play are now void and the league tables have been recalculated
to remove any of their results.
The Alfred Free House team has moved venue to the, er, Frensham
RBL. They will play under the temporary name of Hale Nomads (RBL)
until the end of the season.
That’s all fine and dandy except it leaves a very sparse fixture list,
with most weeks seeing 4 teams sitting out in what was a fairly short season
anyway. This coming week sees the end of the first half of the season, at which
point each team will have played the others in their division exactly once each.
I would like therefore to replace the final 7 weeks as scheduled with a
full home and away cycle, which with the remaining 12 teams in 2 divisions
takes 10 weeks. This would take the season up to the 23rd March,
with no more rest weeks and each team playing the others 3 times in total. Much
better value for money in my book!
Obviously this relies on pubs and teams not having organised events
between the published fixtures, particularly the venues with 2 teams, although
I can work around a certain number of dates. But Monday night is usually quiet
so here’s hoping. I’ve already spoken to a couple of venues so could I please
ask everyone else to check whether this idea could work and let me know if you
are up for it as soon as possible please. This includes Div 1 teams!
Just to clarify, this coming Monday (12th), fixtures as
scheduled except:
·
Fox Inn play the Hale Nomads (RBL) (Alfred as
was) at the Frensham RBL.
·
Cricketers
BL match away at Frensham
RBL A cancelled.
That’s our lot before the holidays folks, have
a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I’ll see you all in 2015!
I was very much saddened to hear this morning
of the passing of John Stoodley, long time quizzer with the Cricketers
BL. I had only spoken to him on Monday when I dropped the questions round.
I repeat here the kind words Pat Brogan
put on our Facebook page, which I suspect will not have been seen by many:
“It is
with great sadness that I have to inform the quiz community of the passing of
the founder member of the Cricketers Badshot Lea team, my personal mentor in
quizzing and erstwhile question master John Stoodley. He was a unique
character, a pillar of village life here and a personal friend. As you all
know, John preferred to 'tipple' rather than play in recent times and was an
observer during our opening fixture against the Fox on Monday. Sadly, this turned
out to be the last time we spent any quality time with this local legend. R.I.P
"Stoodles"..........”
Ooops! Completely forgot to mention that since
I was so late getting fixtures out, the questions for Monday could not be
posted.
I shall be delivering them to the appropriate pubs on Monday, having had them
sent via our backup route (e-mailed to my sister, who bags them up!), so no
need to panic!
At last,
fixtures for the Monday 10th start can be found here.
Unfortunately
I made a mistake with the league structure at the AGM and still have had to
move Cricketers BL to Div 2 because of numbers. Sorry guys.
Sorry about
the delay and lack of communication - I have been busy, away and unwell since
the AGM.
I shall
post the AGM minutes and reset this website for the new season this weekend.
After
consideration I have decided that the proposed knock-out to fill some of the
rest days is not workable.
Any resting
teams wanting to play a friendly instead, please ask me and I can have a copy
of the questions provided.
As usual I
would be grateful if captains would acknowledge they are in receipt of the
fixtures and that all is in order for Monday. Thanks!
Please find
the agenda here for anyone who is interested.
Unfortunately
two teams are dropping out.
As usual I
am totally off the pace at this time of year, apologies etc. etc!!
Short notice I know, but the AGM will be at the Albion on 20th October at 8:30pm.
Agenda to follow
soon. Basically subs unchanged at £65 total and match dates proposed as 10/11-08/12
and 05/01-02/03 assuming 13-16 teams.
I have had
no news of anyone dropping out nor of any teams wanting to join.
I have had
an inquiry from a lady very keen to find a team, if anyone is down a player and
would like to consider her please get in touch.
I would
appreciate if if all teams could let me know whether they will be playing this
year ASAP. Thanks.
Hope to see many of you on the 20th.
