Hi folks!
Firstly, apologies about the short notice but due to work commitments
I’ve only just been able to finalize the date for the AGM. Because of this I’ve
actually contacted everyone I have e-mail or mobile details for, whether or not
they are the usual contact, just in case there are any delays with the usual
pub / captain route.
The AGM will this year
be on Monday 10th October at 8.30pm, again at the Wheatsheaf. The Agenda is here, and as
usual topics can be raised and motions put forward on the night.
As always, all are welcome to come and have a say about any aspect of
the Quiz and to hear what others are thinking. There is some interest from new
teams this year, including an enquiry (via Michael at the H&H) from a pub
in Alton who would like to play, and as this is outside our normal distance
limit needs voting on.
As ever Mick and Barbara are
offering a few refreshments, so could I ask anyone planning on attending to let
me know (by phone, text or e-mail) so that we have
some idea of numbers to expect on the night - thanks. Also could I ask teams
not coming along to let me know whether they are
going to be playing again this year (I’m sure you all will be!).
Also I’d like to point out that from now on I will primarily be using
our new (OK re-acquired…) fiql.co.uk domain name (www.fiql.co.uk
& mail@fiql.co.uk), so please be sure to update
your bookmarks, contacts and safe senders lists as appropriate. The ferngreen addresses
will be OK for a while, but I will withdraw them at some point to keep things
simple (for me if no-one else!).
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the 10th.
Monday saw
the 20th FIQL Presentation Evening and Big Friendly Quiz,
hosted this year by Div. 2 winners The Fox.
Another
good turnout saw the winning teams presented with their awards and then enjoy a
hearty supper of Cottage Pie kindly laid on by landlady Sam. The quiz
itself was a close-run thing, with Fox B making up a lot of ground on Wheatsheaf
A before finally stealing it on a tie-break!
In the picture with the trophies are (L-R):
Russ Eaton & Pat Ward (Wheatsheaf A), Les Pownall,
John Wright, Phil Harris, Grant Morgan, Jean Thomas and Carol Styles (all Fox
B), and Pat Eaton (Wheatsheaf A).
I’ve once
again sent a piece off to the Farnham Herald, hopefully it might appear this
week.
Next item
on our calendar will be the AGM sometime around September, in the meantime have
a great summer and I’ll see you all next season!
Just a
quick reminder to those I haven’t heard from about the presentation and BFQ on
Monday - if you could let me know either way whether you’ll be attending that
would be helpful.
Sam will be
serving Cottage Pie, so don’t come along expecting just a few nibbles! (any
veggies let me know).
Also I
gather the main website had a few problems yesterday - apologies to anyone who
couldn’t log on.
This year’s
presentation evening and BFQ is being held on 4th April at
the Fox.
As always,
it’s open to all involved in the quiz, not just the regular teams of 4 - spare
team members, QM’s, scorers, landlords, everyone is welcome.
Presentation
starts at 8.30pm, with the beer-round style quiz to follow. As usual, I do ask
teams to let me know whether they will be attending or not and if so a rough
idea of numbers, particularly as Sam is contemplating doing a hot meal again as
she did two seasons back. Watch this space for the menu, and please come along
with an appetite to do justice!
Hope to see
you all there on the 4th!
Well how
weird was that? I honestly thought we’d be saying cheerio to the trophy behind
the bar in the pub tonight but in a bizarre repeat of last year’s final-day
scenario, the Lamb ‘A’ again beat the Bat & Ball ‘A’, thereby
giving the Div. 1 title to the Wheatsheaf ‘A’! Unlike last time though
the Bat & Ball ‘A’ do hang on to runners-up spot.
Despite
their win against the Lamb ‘B’ tonight, the Cherry Tree ‘B’
couldn’t quite muster enough points to leapfrog them in the table and so will
join the Fox ‘A’ in Div. 2 next year.
The
promotion places in Div.2 had already been settled by last week, it was just
left to see who would take the title: both the Fox ‘B’ and the Ball
& Wicket won their matches tonight, but the Fox ‘B’ win on total
points scored. It also means they will host the BFQ this year - more
details when I’ve had a word with the Landlady there.
Full
results here.
Hope to see
you all at the Presentation and BFQ!
Phil our
question setter is taking a short holiday this week and so has sent out
questions for the next TWO weeks’ matches. They should be clearly marked, but
please double-check if you receive two sets this week.
It also
means that the latest result and tables won’t be included in the envelope for
the 28th.
Oh, and
I’ve finally put up a picture of our new Pub the Alfred Free House,
along with a link to their web site (don’t any more pubs have websites in this
day and age?).
It’s only
200 yards up the road from me but I just never got round to it. Sorry Mark!
I’d just
like to wish a Happy New Year to all our Quizzers!
Well, that
was some pretty good timing from the snow, avoiding any problems for us this
year at least. Hope you all have a great Christmas and I’ll see you all again
in the New Year.
In the meantime,
I’ve been asked again to publish this link regarding applications for BBC4’s
Only Connect quiz show, which can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/shows/beonashow/only_connect5.
If you like
the show but don’t want to go as far as applying for it, you can try the fun
little puzzles at http://www.bbc.co.uk/onlyconnect/quiz.
Gaahhhh!
After all the trouble last week, it seems when the website came up again I
forgot to upload the results page to the main site. Hope everyone found
the results on www.fiql.co.uk!
My Web Host
has been down since Monday night, when I tried to post the results. It’s back
up now, and hopefully it’s a one-off, but as a back-up I have for the time
being mirrored the site at the original www.fiql.co.uk
address which I have luckily just obtained from Mo. I was using this for
development of the new site and I’m not sure I’ll be able to permanently mirror
the site there, but if ever there are problems at www.ferngreen.co.uk/fiql
again, please check the www.fiql.co.uk
site.
I’ve just
been informed that my earlier post had Bat & Ball ‘A’ moving to the Alfred
Free House, which rather surprised the Bat & Ball if nothing else! Of
course it should have been the Ball & Wicket ‘A’. Apologies for any
confusion caused.
At long
last the fixtures are here!
Had a bit
of a panic when I couldn’t find the fixture list generator I wrote a few
seasons back but it turned up in the end - I wouldn’t like to try that job by
hand!
Turns out
the Holly Bush teams are both “new”, with only one experienced
player between them, as their previous team’s players have all left. As such
they have elected not to claim the Division 1 place won by that team,
and so the Fox ‘A’ get to stay up after all.
Still no
response from all those flyers I sent out so 16 teams it is, all kicking off on
the 1st November.
Oh, and here’s
the Minutes from the AGM if anyone is interested.
Sorry about
the lack of postings folks but I’ve been up to my ears in work these last few
weeks…
As I trust
you’ve all heard by now, I have had to postpone the start from the agreed date,
as I haven’t had time even to write up the AGM minutes until a few days ago. We
now begin on 1st November. Fixture lists should be out within
a day or two, other paperwork has gone out to all Pubs and / or Quiz Captains
as appropriate.
This year
we are down to 16 teams, having lost the Golden Fleece and Liberal
Club, but we will have an extra team from the Holly Bush. Note that
the Bat & Ball ‘A’ has moved to the Alfred Free House. My
huge mailshot appears to have been a waste of stamps!
Unfortunately
this situation requires an adjustment to the divisions (as detailed in rule
4.3.ii) to even up the numbers. The Fox ‘A’ has therefore been moved to
move to Div. 2 - sorry guys!
If things
go to plan I’m aiming to totally revise the web site before Christmas, using
more modern tools for a better appearance and greater compatibility with
browsers other than IE. If nothing else it seems an appropriate way to
celebrate our 20th year - did you know we’ve been going that
long? I didn’t realize until I updated the Facts page! Given half a chance I’ll
do a new logo and allsorts, you never know. Still, it’s quite a milestone and I
know more than a few of you have been here since the beginning so it’s raised
glasses all round!
20
Years - Cheers to us!
