Despite what I said last post the AGM is to be held on Monday 8th September at 8.30pm at the Wheatsheaf.
The Agenda is here, and this year there are no rule changes or extraordinary items proposed. As usual topics can be raised and motions put forward on the night but anyone wishing to table a detailed proposal may want to contact me beforehand so it can be printed up for ease of discussion.
As always, all are welcome to come and have a say about any aspect of the Quiz and to hear what others are thinking.
As Mick and Barbara are again offering a few refreshments could I ask anyone planning on attending to let me know (by phone, text or e-mail) so that we have some idea of numbers to expect on the night - thanks.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the 8th.
Congratulations again to the Cherry Tree B and the Golden Fleece (pictured right) who were
yesterday presented with their winners’ trophies at the Cherry Tree. Also receiving certificates were divisional runners-up
the Bat & Ball B and the Holly Bush.
The Quiz
this year was won by the Wheatsheaf A
(Hooray!) after a tie-break with the Bat
& Ball A, and contrary to certain opinions expressed I did not write the
questions!
Thanks of
course to Elaine for hosting the event and providing some lovely grub - I’m
sure no-one went home hungry.
Finally,
I’m toying with the idea of having the AGM earlier this year as a late meeting
in recent seasons has resulted in a late start to the season. That would mean
mid-August which might not fit in well with holidays and the like so anyone
with any strong opinions on the matter please drop me a line.
Well that’s
about it for another season, have a great summer and I hope to see you all
again later in the year.
The
presentation this year has been confirmed for the Cherry Tree on Monday May 19th,
with proceedings kicking off at 8.30 sharp. The event as ever is open to anyone
involved in the quiz - QM’s, scorers, landlords - and not just players, so I
hope to see lots of you there on the night.
As in
previous years I would be grateful if teams could let me know how many are
intending to come - including if you won’t be attending - so that we have an
idea of numbers for the food (text or e-mail are best). Ta!
Congratulations
to the Cherry Tree B on winning Div.
1 this year, with the Bat & Ball B
in runner-up place. Div. 2 was won by the Golden
Fleece, who just pipped the Holly
Bush on average score.
BFQ honours this year are with Div. 1, so I’ll
send out details as soon as I’ve confirmed with the Cherry Tree. As always, all are welcome to the final bash and I
hope to see as many of you as possible there to see the season out with a bang!
Well, one more
match to go and it’s one of the closest seasons I can remember. Three teams in
contention for Div. 1, and no relegation places fixed yet; and although the top
two in Div. 2 are already decided, the Golden
Fleece could well pinch it in their debut season.
All to play
for next week!
For anyone who thinks there’s not enough sport in our League quizzes…
Ok, it’s
only one question this time, but the one about electrical conductance
was incorrect. The henry measures electrical inductance.
Electrical conductance is a different thing altogether and is measured
(in the SI) in the much more obscure siemens, sometimes called a reciprocal
ohm. Fortunately this one question alone did not decide anyone’s overall
result but, well, you know what I’m like and I can’t let this sort of thing
pass! Quizit have been duly informed...
And once
more: missing subs: Grrr…..
Well here
we are at the halfway point in the Season. Doesn’t seem right, what with them
putting Christmas so early in the fixtures this year!
It’s at
this stage that I notice a couple of awkward consequences of the way the
fixtures have worked out (I’ve not actually arranged them myself previously).
We all play next week the same teams we played tonight, and won’t see the teams
we played first round until the very end, but apologies must go to the Fox B
and Bourne RBL who each have two rest weeks in a row. This isn’t ideal and
I’ll make sure I avoid it next year.
Also It’s
the point at which I notice there are still a couple of subs outstanding. I’m
sure you know who you are so please get the proverbial finger out and I won’t
have to chase you up anymore. Ta.
OK then…
I’ve had a
comment or five about certain of the questions last night, for either being
very misleadingly worded or just plain wrong. I’ll get on to Phil at Quizit about them, but if anyone has any complaints
about topics other than flags, kings, escalopes and pop idols
then let me know ASAP, ta.
Well, that rather
short run of 4 games (3 for some) is our lot before Christmas so I’ll just wish
you all a Happy Holiday Season ‘till we get going again on the 7th
of January. Cheers!
As you
might expect, this Website attracts occasional attention from TV companies
looking for contestants for quiz shows - some familiar, some brand new. In
fact, just last month I went up to London for the pitching of a new show (which
may or may not be called “You and Whose Army?” should it ever see the light of
day) which was great fun to do but was such short notice I wasn’t able to
advertise it here. Usually the info comes in the Summer so I don’t bother
posting it since surely no-one is looking at this twaddle outside the Quiz
Season, but this time you have the chance to go for the Big One if
you’re feeling brave:
There are a couple of results missing at the moment, and it’s safe to say I’ve had more trouble with late scores this season than ever before. Fair enough, some of those are down to the new teams which is perhaps understandable but I would remind everyone to call their results in as soon as possible, and to text them if you can’t get through if my phone is off (like last night - major cock-up had my match running very late). I really don’t like having to try and chase up results after closing time.
Oh, and while I’m off on one, those teams with outstanding subs are on the case, aren’t they? Good, I thought so…
I’ve added a separate page for the various Documents and so forth since there were odd links all over the place. Also I’ll add links to external stuff of possible interest as and when I think of things.
I’ve just updated the Members page in case anyone can’t find the Golden Fleece. Also the map links now work again. If any Pubs besides the Bat & Ball have a website they’d like me to link to, just drop me an e-mail.
Also I have added the Rules and Fixtures documents in RTF for anyone who can’t read MS Word.
At long last I have the fixture lists finalised - quite a task since every pub playing in Div 1 has two teams playing and home match clashes have to be avoided! As previously stated the League begins on 12th November. While the Christmas break will not be affected, with the last game of 2007 being on 3rd December and restarting on 7th January, there will be an extra break for Easter Monday on the 24th March. Extra dates added on the end takes the last match to the 14th April. Fixture Lists can be found here and I will send out the printed versions and other info as soon as possible.
Some of the positions of teams in the league may seem strange, so I’ll try and explain:
· The Holly Bush and Fox Inn (now Fox Inn A) are relegated to Div 2.
· The Ball & Wicket A win promotion to Div.1
· The Bear and Ragged Staff has withdrawn, despite winning promotion last season, due to having no pub.
· The Royal Oak is therefore promoted in its place, but it has now become a Curry House so the Team will play as the Fox B in Div. 1
· The Cherry Tree B has also withdrawn, but…
· The Halfway House is no longer available on a Monday, so that team will now play as a new Cherry Tree B. Under the current rulings they will therefore remain in Div. 1.
· We welcome two brand new teams to the League, the Golden Fleece from Elstead and a second team from the Wheatsheaf, who will both start as is usual in Div. 2
The full League layout can be found in the League Table.
I can finally announce that we shall begin the new Season on 12th November. The Christmas break will not be affected with the last game of 2007 being on 3rd December, restarting on 7th January. Extra dates will be added to the end of the Season as required, and I will send out (and post here) the fixture lists as soon as I have final confirmation from one last team.
It is with great sadness that I must report the passing of two long-standing quiz players earlier this year.
Duncan Beal of the Lamb ’B’ died suddenly on 5th August, aged 56, and Martin Pryce of the Cherry Tree ‘A’ succumbed following a long illness on 1st September, aged 50. Martin’s team-mate Chris O’Dell has provided a few words.
Both will be sadly missed in the coming Season, and our thoughts go out to both families.
Once again the Season should be about to start and there’s trouble with Pubs changing landlord, closing, going foodie and God knows what else, so I’ll have to delay the start ‘till at least the end of the month so I can try and sort the problems out. And this postal strike isn’t helping much either…
I know that, for one reason or another, some teams haven’t even seen the registration papers yet so I’m going to try and contact each team directly over the next day or two. I would be grateful if any quizzer reading this could drop me an e-mail to confirm they at least know that things are underway.
As ever, I’ll try and help any team having Pub troubles if they get in touch.
Minutes of the AGM held on 3rd September can be found here.
