Trophy Presentation and Big Friendly Quiz

15/05/07

Last night saw another well-attended end of year bash, with the Ball & Wicket filled almost to bursting! Pictured right are the two division winners, the Bat & Ball 'A' and the Ball & Wicket 'A', with their trophies.

The BFQ was won by the Royal Oak, narrowly beating the Wheatsheaf (grrrr….). Well done!

Thanks are of course due to Gary and his staff for hosting the event so well and making it a great night out. Hope to see you all next Season!

Trophy Presentation and Big Friendly Quiz

02/05/07

At long last I can confirm that the Presentation and BFQ is to be held at the Ball & Wicket, 104 Upper Hale Rd, on 14th May, with proceedings starting at 8.30 p.m. with the prize presentation followed by the Big Friendly Quiz and some light grub. Apologies for the long gap since the end of the season but there have been a couple of bank holidays to work around.

For those who haven't been to one before, the BFQ is an informal quiz of three "beer round" sets of questions, all for fun but you can try and avenge any painful defeats suffered during the past season! There's no team size restrictions so any reserve or stand-in players or scorers you've used this year are welcome, so please try and send a team along; it's nice to end a good season with a well-supported final bash!

Receiving shields and certificates this year are:

            Div 1:  Bat & Ball 'A' (winners) and Lamb ‘B’ (runners-up)

Div 2:  Ball & Wicket 'A' (winners) and Bear & Ragged Staff (runners-up)

so I trust we'll see those teams there!

If you're a Landlord please make sure your team hears about this, if you're a Captain please try and rally your team members and make it on over to the Ball & Wicket on the 14th!

Finally, I would be most grateful if teams would let me know, via the usual channels, whether they intend to attend or not, so we can have some idea of numbers for the food. Ta!

Final Match of the Season - That’s All Folks!

03/04/07

(Sorry for the delay posting this - my ISP’s server has been up the creek…)

Well that’s almost the end of another Season. As previously announced, congratulations to the Bat & Ball A for winning the Division 1 title,  with the Lamb B claiming the runner-up spot. Division 2 was won by the Ball & Wicket A, with the Bear & Ragged Staff in second place.

The Presentation and Big Friendly Quiz will this year be hosted by the Div. 2 Champions at the Ball & Wicket. I’ll confirm the date as soon as I can but it will probably be towards the end of April. Everyone involved in the quiz is welcome, not just the regular teams but reserves, questionmasters, Landlords, anyone at all so come along and end the season in style!

Finally, I shall be attempting to hold the AGM much earlier this year, hopefully May or early June, since leaving it late in the year as I have done so far has given me all sorts of problems and ended up with late starts. I’ll keep everyone informed via the usual channels.

Bat & Ball A win Div 1!

20/03/07

Congratulations to the Bat & Ball A who last night secured the Division 1 title,  with an unassailable lead going into the last two games. Second place is wide open however, with all of the next six teams in contention.

Div 2 is now down to a tussle between Ball & Wicket A and Bear & Ragged Staff, who can’t be caught at the top of the table.

Are You Playing Away?

13/03/07

I’ve heard that a couple of teams may be having venue problems and may have to find alternative locations for certain fixtures. Just a quick reminder that I will do whatever  I can to help out teams in trouble, so please get in touch and we’ll see what can be done.

Also, if your team does arrange a venue swap for any reason would you please keep me informed. Ta.

Abandon Pub!

29/12/06

As of today the Queen’s Head team is transferring permanently to the Wheatsheaf in West St. I have had no interest at all from the management of the Queens’ since the day Fuller’s took Gale’s over and would have confirmed the move a fortnight ago if the then landlady of the Wheaty hadn’t announced that she too was leaving, with no successor arranged. As it happens the pub has now been taken over by Mick from the Bear and Ragged Staff, so with a keen supporter of the quiz involved we now have a permanent home.

I shall be updating the various details on the website over the next day or so, and I will be in touch with all the teams who have yet to play us at home to make sure they know of the changes - indeed if any captain yet to play us is reading this could they kindly e-mail me to acknowledge so I don’t need to chase them up. Ta!

p.s. the décor in the Queen’s is bloody awful and the prices have gone through the roof. Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

Correction to Week 8 Results

29/12/06

Ooops! Last week I managed to get the Bat & Ball B vs Cherry Tree A result the wrong way round. I’ve corrected the results tables here but the printed sheet in with the questions tonight will be wrong. Apologies to the teams concerned.

Queen’s / Fox Change of venue

03/12/06

As advised to the Team last week, due to the Queen’s Head refit the Fox’s match at  the Queen’s Head will in fact take place at the Wheatsheaf on West Street, since the originally stated re-opening date gave NO CHANCE to sort stuff out with the new management at the Queen’s. However, our sole  home game at the Queen’s gave little hope for the future anyway, and our heartfelt apologies go out to the Cherry Tree A team who had to suffer the rather amateur arrangements for the Queen’s Home game on the 20th November. I now have the entire Christmas Break to decide where we can best be accommodated as a credible quiz team proudly clutching last seasons winner’s Trophy!

Correction to Contacts

06/11/06

Ooops! The Six Bells Team has actually become the Ball & Wicket A, not B, team. Also I had mistyped the ‘phone number for Paul Allamand at the Cricketers BL. So Division 2 Captains might want this updated Contact List then.

League Fixtures Finalised

30/10/06

At last I have the fixture list from Quizit! Apologies for the delays and any confusion involved but at last we’re underway. The Season starts 6th November, and will now go on ‘till 2nd April to allow for the late start. The Christmas break will be unaffected.

Part of the reason behind our late start was to allow a couple of pubs a final chance to enter a team as there was doubt at first whether they could continue, and I’m glad to say it has mostly worked out. We have lost only one team this year, the Spotted Cow, which leaves us with 18 teams. Two teams have changed pubs, the Sandrock becoming the Bat & Ball B while the Six Bells is now the Ball & Wicket B. The Bat & Ball B keep the Div. 1 place they earned as the Sandrock last year thanks to the new ruling, but the Ball & Wicket B have unfortunately had to drop to Div. 2 to even out the numbers. With 9 teams in each division there will be Rest Weeks for all during the new Season.

Finally, Fixture Lists and Contact Lists have gone out to all Pubs and/or Captains today. I have not sent out new Rules as there are no changes affecting the playing of the Quiz this year, but anyone who wants a new copy can get them here or contact me for a copy.
