FIQL Facts

History: 13 Years of FIQL

FIQL was the brain child of Martin Billett who was a member of the Waverley Arms team playing in the Courage League. Martin was tired of driving miles to play quiz on Monday evenings so he wrote to 40 pubs in the Farnham area and at a meeting in early September 1991, 16 of them signed up with 23 teams in two divisions. And, as they say, the rest is history. Soon after, pressure of establishing his own business forced Martin to give up his part in running FIQL and Mo Stokes who had been voted League Secretary at the inaugural meeting, took over. Mo continued as the organiser and up to 2001/02 had the able assistance of Andy Baylis who left the Sandrock and the area in July 2002. Mark Price was Results Officer from 1991 to 1994. Mo had to resign in June 2004 due to illness with Russ Eaton taking up the reins for the 2004/2005 season.

Division Formation

It was agreed at the AGM on 17 July 2002 that the Organiser would decide the division formation based on the number of teams in the League with the proviso that those teams that were promoted at the end of last season would go up; and those demoted would go down.

Any problems?

Anything about the Quiz that you are unsure about or are completely in the dark about? Is something niggling you about how the Quiz is run? See the light! Niggle no longer!

Please Contact Us and we will reprint your questions and views here and if possible, the answer to the question or solution to the problem. There are Quiz Rules of Play. Download a copy (Acrobat 4.0) if you have lost yours or believe (erroneously!) that your pub has never received one. But please bear in mind - it is supposed to be fun!!

Rearranged Matches

It was agreed at the AGM held on 1 August 2001 that no postponements will be allowed except in circumstances which affect the venue, eg flood, fire, etc. And where a team is unable to play for other reasons, the opposing team gets the points; the winning score is calulated from the average away/home score (depending on the venue of the team able to play); and the match is added to the `games played' column of the League Table on the News page.

Substitutes

Each team should have substitute members to draw upon in case of emergency. Where a pub has two teams it was agreed in times gone by, that the substitute players are not interchangeable. Where a brave team chooses to play with fewer than four players (and there are some - bless 'em!), the Joker Round question for the unclaimed category(ies) should be offered to the opposing side for 1 point. Remember, there are no postponements allowed other than by the licensee for reasons which affect the venue. So recruit substitutes and give them a chance of a game!

What happens if there's a tie?

To determine league position, in the event of a tie on matchpoints, the average score will be used to decide. If there is still a tie, the least number of points scored against will decide. And don't forget - the home captain is responsible for reporting the result. In the case of a Knockout Competition there can be no tie and extra questions, toss of a coin, etc should all be used to produce a result.

Annual Big Friendly Quiz

Many years ago, an AGM voted for the Big Friendly Quiz to be hosted by the winners of each division on a consecutive basis. This is by way of a reward to the pubs for which FIQL was set up in the first place. Next year, the BFQ will be held at the home of the winners of Division 2.

Pictured here at the Holly Bush's hosting of the Big Friendly Quiz in April 1997, are the captains of the winning teams: Ken Johnson for the Waverley (Div 1), Derek Pope for the Holly Bush B team (Div 2) and Mike Edginton, Hare & Hounds (Div 3) with some of their team members and the ubiquitous Mo (before she acquired her bus pass!). My how time flies!

Winners' Gallery

Here is the Winners' Gallery from 1991 to 2002 and as you can see, the third division survived from 1996 to 2001.

The Cricketers Bourne and the Eldon Hotel are no longer with us, having been demolished for residential development. Two others have changed their names - Blue Boy to The Exchange, Duke of Cambridge at Tilford to the Hankley. Prince Alfred, Hankley, Waverley Arms and Sandrock are no longer members of the League but would be welcomed back with open arms!

Past members also include the Albion Tavern, Running Stream, Imperial Arms, Bricklayers Arms, Black Prince, Elm Tree, Seven Stars, William Cobbett, Spotted Cow, Sandrock, Crown Inn, Duke of Cambridge and Cricketers at Wrecclesham.

It was agreed in the past to limit the size of the League to three divisions of ten teams in each so we class 30 as the maximum number of teams. For the season 2003/04 we had 22 teams spread over 2 divisions.
